Course Description
Explore fundamentals or expand your skills in acrylic painting. Through a variety of activities, you’ll experiment with different techniques, styles, and subject matter while developing your personal style. The class will cover key skills such as sketching, color blocking, building layers, color mixing, and brush techniques, with a strong focus on effective composition. Whether you’re looking to refine your skills or start a new creative journey, all styles and skill levels are welcomed and encouraged. Mixed media methods will be explored for those interested in going beyond acrylics. This course is designed to help you to capture the subjects that inspire you and to develop your unique signature painting style.

- Acrylic paint in a reputable brand (Suggested: Winsor Newton Galeria or Professional, Liquitex Professional, Golden Heavy Body or Open). Minimum Colors: Titanium White, Mars Black, Raw Umber, Burnt Sienna, Yellow Ochre, Green (choose any you like), Cobalt Blue (Windsor Blue, Phthalo Blue, or Ultramarine Blue are also fine), Crimson or Cadmium Red, Cadmium Yellow Light.
- An extra tube of titanium white acrylic paint
- Suggested (optional) additional colors: Magenta and Paynes Grey
- An assortment of acrylic or mixed media brushes in flat, filbert, and round. Does not have to be the brands below. I suggest getting at least 4 sizes between sizes 2 and 12 in each type.

Meet Your Instructor

Kelly Bisogno has taught art to children, teens, and adults for over 15 years. She holds BFA degrees in Scultpure and Art Education from VCU. Previously, she was an art teacher at James River High School for over 10 years, teaching AP 2D Design, Studio Art, 3D Design, and Digital Media. Kelly was the Chesterfield County and Central Region of Virginia High School Art Teacher of the Year in 2015 and the James River High School Teacher of the Year that same year. She is a Distinguished Fellow of the Virginia Art Education Association and the Virginia Art Educator of the Year in 2024. Kelly is experienced in teaching various art media to individuals of many ages, skill levels, and interests. She loves helping people connect to their creative potential.
